I grew up in Meigs County, Ohio about 20 miles from the site of the doomed Silver Bridge. In fact, my parents crossed the Silver Bridge early the day of the collapse in December 1967. I was there too...Mom was pregnant with me at that time. Each December Mom reminds me of that trip across the bridge that day and how glad she is they took their trip early.

It's ironic that I didn't hear any stories about Mothman until several years ago. I did hear a few rumors about the curse of Chief Cornstalk but nothing about Mothman. I was shocked when I recently questioned my mother about what she'd heard of Mothman. I was shocked because around the time of the Mothman sightings she and my father took my brother and sister to look for Mothman. They went to the TNT area or the munitions dump and set up lawn chairs to wait for Mothman to present himself! Thankfully, Mothman wasn't in town that day or he wasn't in the mood. Mom said, "We didn't see anything." I sputtered probably louder than I should have, "GOOD!"

Mom also surprised me by telling me that she saw a UFO over the skies of the Ohio River area around 1966 or 1967. She wasn't the only one. Mom had a police scanner and said the local police were seeing it too. Mom remembered a phone call from a friend who was a police and ambulance dispatcher. The dispatcher was busy fielding calls and had no time to go out and check the sky for a UFO. The dispatcher asked Mom if she had seen the UFO. Mom said she had and the dispatcher said, "Well, if you see it then I believe it!" and went back to her switchboard.

I asked Mom why she never told me these things before and she said, "You didn't ask."

The mothman looms large down there. I want to go to visit that area myself. Hopefully the wife and I will get down to Point Pleasant. Since you are from that area are there any other paranormal points of interest close by we should check out?

My wife and I also want to visit the area, especially during the Mothman festival, but we always seem to have something else going on. I might put it on the calendar for this year.

2008 Mothman Festival is September 20-21 in Point Pleasant, WV.
